A honey gift box: how to put together a gift that makes sense

Honey is one of the few gifts nobody returns and that always gets used up. But “a jar of honey” and “a good honey gift” are not the same thing. The difference lies in the choice of variety, in what goes alongside the honey and in the story the gift carries. Here is how to put one together.

Start with the person, not the honey

The first question is not “which honey” but “for whom”. A few types of recipient we see:

• The lover of mild flavours (or a family with children): acacia honey, wildflower honey.

• From the same hive: bee pollen, propolis or perga. Perga is the premium addition for someone you want to really delight.
• Something honey is eaten with: walnuts, dried fruit, good-quality tea.
• For skincare: a foot balm with olive oil, for someone who appreciates natural care.
• A note. A short card saying who the beekeeper is, where the hives are and what is in the jar. That is the difference between “honey” and “honey from Josip in Sokolovac”.

Packaging

Honey doesn’t need much: a sturdy box, a little paper, jars that don’t touch each other. Over-the-top packaging distracts from the product. If you are preparing the box in advance, sealed honey keeps for years, but buy the perga and bee pollen closer to the occasion, as they have a shelf life of roughly a year.

Who not to give bee products to

• Children under one year old; honey is not given to babies.
• People with an allergy to bee products; if you are not sure, honey is a safer choice than bee pollen, propolis or a balm with bee venom.
