What is perga?

Bee bread explained simply: how it forms inside the hive, how it differs from bee pollen and why it is rare.

Perga — better known in English as bee bread — is a hive product that forms when bees pack pollen into the cells of the honeycomb, where it goes through a natural process inside the hive. Because of that process perga differs from plain bee pollen and is considered one of the most valuable products of the bee world.

Most customers know honey well, some know propolis and bee pollen, but perga is a product that still needs explaining. That is exactly why perga is the central product of the Oaza Bee brand.

How perga forms

Bees carry pollen into the hive and pack it into the honeycomb cells. They press it down with their heads, cover it with a thin layer of honey and wax and seal it away from air. Inside the hive, in contact with bee enzymes, honey and warmth, the pollen goes through what beekeepers describe as a natural lactic fermentation — it takes roughly two weeks.

The result is darker, firm granules or “tablets” in the shape of the comb cells, with a slightly sour-sweet taste reminiscent of honey and dried fruit. The colour ranges from light yellow to dark brown, depending on the plants the bees collected the pollen from.

Perga is therefore not an industrial product. It forms in the world of bees, in the natural rhythm of the hive. Our job is to respect that process, carefully harvest the perga and prepare it for you in a way that preserves its natural value.

Why perga is rare

Bees make perga for themselves — it is the food for the brood and young bees. A beekeeper can take only a small part from each hive, and removing it from the comb takes time, knowledge and precision. Beekeeping sources usually mention just a few hundred grams per hive per year.

That is why perga has a premium price: its value lies not in the packaging but in the process, the origin, the work of the bees and the work of the beekeeper.

What perga contains

Like bee pollen, perga is naturally rich in proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, and the fermentation in the hive changes its structure and taste. We do not talk about perga as a miracle product — we talk about it as a rare, natural, high-quality hive product that deserves a special place in the diet of people who choose consciously.

If you are allergic to pollen or bee products, have a medical condition or are pregnant, consult a professional before use.
